The intervarsity 'National Championships' (previously known as Australian University Games or 'AUG') is Australia's largest annual multi sport event, attracting around 8,000 participants in over 30 sports - including hockey of course! Held each September/October, the Games provide university athletes with the opportunity to compete against each other in a national carnival, with an action-packed, week-long social program conducted to complement the sporting activities.
The history of InterVarsity hockey however goes back long before the inception of AUG. The first match was played in 1908 between women's teams from the University of Melbourne and the University of Adelaide, and the following year saw the inaugural men's match - between Melbourne and Sydney. Since then teams from MUHC have established a proud tradition at InterVarsity, having won both the men's and women's titles more than any other university.
The 2018 Division 1 Nationals will be held in Gold Coast, 22 - 27 September (during the Semester 2 holidays). To be eligible to participate, you must be enrolled in at least one subject at the University in Semester 2 (undergraduate, postgraduate, research, and exchange students are all eligible). Note that you do not have to be a member of the Hockey Club to play for Melbourne Uni in intervarsity competition.
Cost is typically around $800 (which includes registration, accommodation, transport pass, and uniform), plus individual travel arrangements to & from the host city.
